Do you want to know more about the German healthcare system?

Here you will find information on the following:

Do you have a question about health?

The Unabhängige Patientenberatung Deutschland (Independent Patient Advice Service for Germany, UPD) provides free advice on all matters relating to health. You can ask for advice on medical or legal issues, such as health insurance, sickness benefits and doctors’ surgeries in your area. Or about operations or medication.

The Federal Ministry of Health runs a citizens' hotline. Hotline staff will answer any questions about the healthcare system. There is also an email and sign language telephone (video phone) service for people who cannot hear or are hard of hearing. You can find telephone numbers on this website for any questions you have about health, long-term care insurance or coronavirus.

Are you trying to get health insurance?

Everyone in Germany must have health insurance. Health insurance cover is provided by so-called statutory and private providers (including health insurance funds, known as Krankenkassen).

The health insurance fund pays for visits to the doctor, medication, treatment and stays in hospital. You are free to choose the health insurance fund you want to be insured with.

These pages will help you find health insurance:

  • You can find a comparison of all health insurance funds here:
    www.krankenkassen.de
  • Ask the clearing house at the Gesundheitsamt (health department) if you haven't got any health insurance. Or if you do not know whether you are insured. You can find contact information in the flyer.

Do you want to see a doctor?

In Germany, you are free to choose your own general practitioner (doctor).

You can find doctors' surgery opening times written in your language on the website of the Kassenärztliche Vereinigung Hessen (Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Hesse, KVH). You can search for a doctor or specialist near where you live. In the next step you can select your language in the "Fremdsprachen" field under "weitere Suchkriterien" (further search criteria).

What do you have to do if you do not have health insurance?

Some institutions will give you medical treatment even if you do not have health insurance. You can simply go there during opening hours without an appointment:
